SANTA ANA, CA – The CIF Southern Section basketball playoffs kicked off with an intense matchup between Mater Dei and Fountain Valley, held at Mater Dei’s home court. The game was a hard-fought battle, but Mater Dei would secure the victory in the final minutes to secure a 66-57 victory.

The game started with both teams trading baskets, setting the stage for a competitive contest. Fountain Valley’s Aaron DeSantiago was a key force early, knocking down crucial shots, including multiple three-pointers. Mater Dei, led by Blake Davidson and Demarcus Henry, kept pace, closing the first quarter down 16-10. The second quarter saw Mater Dei chip away at Fountain Valley’s lead. Luke Barnett and Malloy Smith provided key offensive plays, keeping Mater Dei within striking distance. By halftime, Fountain Valley held a narrow 33-28 lead, fueled by solid performances from DeSantiago and Devin Payne.

Coming out from the break, Mater Dei shifted momentum in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Malloy Smith followed by a strong drive from Luke Barnett brought Mater Dei closer. Despite Fountain Valley’s resilience, Mater Dei managed to take control, entering the fourth quarter down by just six, 44-38. As the final quarter unfolded, Mater Dei’s defense tightened, forcing crucial stops. Demarcus Henry came up clutch with a key bucket and a free throw to push Mater Dei ahead. With under a minute left, Luke Barnett sank two free throws, sealing the victory for the Monarchs.
Mater Dei advances to the next round of the CIF playoffs, looking to build on their momentum. Despite the losee Foutain Valley showcasd a strong effort and was able to keep Mater Dei on their toes the whole time. The Monarchs will now prepare for a tougher challenge ahead as the road to a CIF title continues.
