ORANGE, CA — The Matthew Hatchette era at Huntington Beach High School kicked off with authority Thursday night as the Oilers secured a 35-18 season-opening win over Orange High. Led by junior quarterback Brady Edmunds, an Ohio State commit, the team looked every bit like a program in transition — and on the rise. Edmunds surpassed 6,000 career passing yards in the win, throwing for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. His top targets were familiar faces: Troy Foster, a Colorado State commit, and Steel Kurtz, a two-way standout committed to Idaho State. Foster caught six passes, including his 29th and 30th career touchdowns, while Kurtz added another score.

Huntington Beach broke open a close game early in the second half, controlling tempo with a pro-style offense installed by Hatchette and his NFL-influenced staff. The former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver took over the program in February, bringing experience from several top Southern California high school programs and a stint at Pierce College.
“I liked that it was the first win. It’s always good to get a win,” Hatchette said. “It’s week one — we’ll clean some stuff up. We’ve got to just have a little bit more composure.”

Despite the win, the Oilers weren’t unscathed. Receiver Nick Navarrete caught four passes before exiting with a possible collarbone injury. Reinforcements are on the way, however, with Long Beach Poly transfer Dylin Bruce expected to join the lineup once eligible.
As the Oilers move forward under Hatchette’s leadership, Thursday’s performance offered a clear message: Huntington Beach football is changing — and fast.
