In a game defined by back-and-forth momentum and dramatic plays, Edison defeated Central 21-14 to claim the CIF State Championship. The matchup showcased why both teams made it this far into the playoffs.
Edison would start off with the ball. However, Edison’s offense would struggle as central defense would stop them from moving the ball. It wasn’t towards the end of the 1st quarter that Juluius Gillick would break out for a rushing touchdown. Putting the Chargers on the board first. Central responded early in the 2nd quarter with a passing touchdown, tying the game 7-7 after a successful PAT. Edison would snap right back as Julius Gillick broke free for a 14-yard rushing touchdown, giving Edison a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
Central would continue to make plays as they would drive downfield with precision. Moments after, Quarterback Jelani Dippel would throw for a 5-yard passing touchdown late in the second, tying the game 14-14. The game would go into halftime with the teams being game being tied up.
After halftime, both team’s defenses came alive, forcing punts and turnovers on downs. Jeremiah Ross and Nathan Stevens both delivered crucial sacks that helped Edison stay alive in this very close game. It was now the 4th quarter, and both teams remained tied. With just under a minute remaining, Sam Thomson connected with Jake Minter for a crucial 55-yard touchdown pass, breaking the tie and putting Edison back in the lead.
Central had one last chance to try and take the game into overtime but faced relentless pressure from Edison’s defense. Edison would close out the game with the final score of 21-14. Despite their 0-2 record at the beginning of the season, Edison would win the CIF State Championship for the first time in school history.
