HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Edison High advanced in the CIF playoffs Friday night, defeating crosstown rival Huntington Beach 31–19 in a spirited postseason matchup. The win sends the Chargers to the next round, while the Oilers’ impressive playoff run comes to an end.

Edison opened strong, striking first with a touchdown pass early in the first quarter to take a 7–0 lead. Huntington Beach quickly answered when quarterback Steel Kurtz found Troy Foster on a 20-yard scoring pass to even the game at 7–7.But the Chargers’ offense stayed hot. They responded with another touchdown late in the first quarter to lead 14–7, and quarterback Sam Thomson added a second-quarter touchdown pass to extend the advantage to 21–7.

The Oilers showed fight before halftime. Brady Edmunds connected with Jimmel Champion for a 19-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 21–14. Edison tacked on a field goal just before the break to carry a 24–14 lead into halftime.Huntington Beach made things interesting in the third quarter, cutting the deficit with a field goal and forcing a safety that brought the score to 24–19. For a brief moment, momentum swung toward the Oilers, but the Chargers’ defense stiffened when it mattered most.

Edison sealed the win in the fourth quarter behind a powerful rushing touchdown that pushed the lead to 31–19. From there, the Chargers controlled the clock and closed out the game to secure the playoff victory.Despite the loss, Huntington Beach’s season ends on a high note — a strong playoff appearance and standout performances from players like Kurtz, Foster, and Champion highlighted the Oilers’ resilience and progress. Edison now moves forward in the CIF bracket, looking to continue its postseason push next week.
