This past Friday, Vista Murrieta hosted Edison in the CIF semi-finals. This was the second time in a row that the Chargers were on the road for a playoff game. This didn’t affect them at all because Edison would still come out on top.
After a huge kickoff return by Jake Minter. Julius Gillick would score on the first drive with a 47-yard rushing touchdown. However, Vista Murrieta would answer right back. Joshua Dobs would return a kickoff for a 95-yard. The teams were now tied up.
This still didn’t matter since Edison would be quick to come back. Sam Thomson found Aiden Brown to move the chargers into the red zone. Julius Gillick scored yet again. Nico Bammer followed with the PAT, with the score now being 14-7. Julius Gillick seemed to be a cheat code for the Chargers. He would go on to score three more times in the 2nd quarter. Vista Murrieta now had to get some action rolling, or their season would be over. Bryson Beavor would go on to connect with Sean McCullough for another touchdown. Entering halftime, Edison would be up 35-14.
Edison’s defense was in control during the second half. Jake Minter had an interception, which was crucial in this defense. Plenty of players were flying around the field to get those tackles. A few of those key players included Carson Schmidt, Jack Knudston, and Matt Lopez. The Chargers made sure that the Broncos remained scoreless in the second half.
The Sutton from Seattle would go on to put up big numbers. Julius Gillick would have a total of 6 touchdowns and 250 rushing yards. Keep in mind this was in a playoff game. Despite having a great night, the referees made horrible calls and gave him two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct for his “celebrations.” Gillick had attempted to appeal this case. However, the officiating crew upheld the penalties. Julius Gillick will now be missing Friday’s game.
Edison will face Simi Valley in the Divison 3 CIF-SS Championship Game. The game will take place at Edison’s home turf, Cap Sheue Field. This will be the first time since 1983 that a championship will be held at Cap Sheue Field. Make sure to come out and pack the Sheue!
