FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball had a tough start to the 2025 season, losing both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against Stanford. The Titans fell 13-1 in game one and 6-3 in game two, starting the season 0-2.

Game One: Stanford 13, Fullerton 1

Stanford took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning and five more in the second to jump ahead 8-0.

Jason Blood made his first start for Fullerton after spending the last two seasons as a relief pitcher. He struggled, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits in just over one inning.

The Titans got their first hit of the season in the fourth inning when Maddox Latta singled up the middle.

Reliever Derek Turner pitched well, entering the game in the second inning with the bases loaded. He allowed just one earned run in four innings, giving up seven hits, striking out four, and walking one.

Fullerton’s only run came in the sixth inning when Jakob Schardt singled to right field, bringing home Latta from second base.

Game Two: Stanford 6, Fullerton 3

Game two also started rough for Fullerton, as Stanford scored four runs in the first inning, helped by two Titan errors.

Despite the early trouble, starting pitcher Mikiah Negrete settled down and had a solid outing. He threw six innings, allowing five runs—all unearned—on three hits. After the first inning, he retired the next nine batters in a row.

Stanford added one run in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead.

Fullerton tried to rally late, scoring one run in each of the last three innings. In the seventh, Andrew Kirchner got his first hit and RBI as a Titan, driving in Schardt.

In the eighth, Schardt brought in another run, scoring Latta from second base. The Titans had a chance for more but left runners stranded on second and third.

Kirchner added one more run in the ninth, bringing home Carter Johnstone with a groundout, making it 6-3.

Schardt was Fullerton’s best hitter of the day, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI in game one, and 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in game two.
